Agenda 2030

See the contribution of the ADELANTE Program to the AGENDA 2030:

Contributing to food security for the population of Cuba

Our project seeks to increase the availability of safe foods of animal origin and improve animal health levels, in order to improve food security in Cuba. In this way, we are contributing to the 2030 Agenda through actions that are framed in SDG 2, but also in 9 and 12. Ensuring access to good quality food, we contribute to the sustainable development of the population of Cuba.

MAIN CONTRIBUTION, FROM THE PROJECT'S THEMATIC PERSPECTIVE

Goal 2.1

By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round

Justification:

The SA CUBA project contributes to target 2.1 by increasing the availability of safe food of animal origin and improving the health standards of animals such as poultry and pigs. This will be done through training of Cuban technicians and improvements in the infrastructure of the laboratories associated with the MINAG of Cuba.

Indicator 2.1.2

Prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity in the population, based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES)

Justification:

The increase in safe food available to the Cuban population would reduce the levels of food insecurity for the Cuban population, both in terms of access to and quality of foods.

CONTRIBUTION FROM A PARTICULAR PROJECT COMPONENT, COMPLEMENTARY TO THE MAIN TOPIC

Goal 9.5

Enhance scientific research, upgrade the technological capabilities of industrial sectors in all countries, in particular developing countries, including, by 2030, encouraging innovation and substantially increasing the number of research and development workers per 1 million people and public and private research and development spending

Justification:

The SA CUBA project contributes to Target 9.5 through the training of laboratory technicians and the purchase of equipment, inputs and reagents for the National Food Hygiene Laboratory, the National Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the National Laboratory for Avian Research and Diagnosis in Cuba.

Indicator 9.5.1

Research and development expenditure as a proportion of GDP

Justification:

The project contributes to this indicator by providing equipment, inputs and reagents that allow for increased analysis to improve access to healthy and quality animal foods for the Cuban population.

CONTRIBUTION FROM CROSSCUTTING TOPICS

Goal 12.A

Support developing countries to strengthen their scientific and technological capacity to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production

Justification:

The SA CUBA project contributes to target 12.A through the training of technicians and professionals from laboratories belonging to the Central Unit of Central Laboratories for Agricultural Health on residues of veterinary medicines, BSE, aflatoxins, salmonella, avian influenza and swine diseases. These trainings are later replicated by means of trainings sessions to the units that produce meat for human consumption. In this way, in addition to purchases that improve laboratories, scientific and technological capabilities are enhanced to improve access to safe food and a more sustainable production.
