With a high level of participation from designers, textile industrialists and sericulture producers, a training day on sericulture was held at the INTI-Textiles Center, on 30 October from 9:30 to 12:30. During the activity, the Engineer Patricia Marino, technical coordinator of the Seda Project, presented the main characteristics of the sericulture activity and the productive national and international picture to evaluate the possibility of undertaking and/or improving its primary productive entrepreneurship (silkworm breeding) and adding value in the productive chain through the textile processing.

The Agronomist Samanta Dobler, from FAUBA, presented the characteristics of the primary production and the economic indicators to be taken into account in order to undertake a sericulture initiative with positive yields. Mrs Josefina Luengo, from the Textile Center laboratory, provided a tangible overview of the classification and winding of cocoons.

Silk is considered the queen of natural fibers because of its properties; it is warm in winter and cool in summer. Its softness and characteristic shine make it a highly sought-after material by major apparel designers. At an exhibition table, participants were able to discover different handcrafted products made with silk.

Currently, in Argentina, the demand for silk and its derivatives exceeds by far the supply, so that ventures related to sericulture arise as an attractive and profitable economic prospect, which does not involve large investments and is environmentally friendly.

The event is carried out within the framework of the Project "Contribution to the reduction of regional poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean, through sericulture with a sustainable approach and added local value", the "Seda Project", with the financial support of the European Union.
