SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS IMPACTED:

Study visit to the "Council for Research in Agriculture and Analysis of Agricultural Economics (CREA)", in Padua, to deepen the knowledge on techniques of sericulture production

Description of the visit:

The study trip to Padua, Italy, was aimed at providing one of the direct beneficiaries of the Seda Project with up-to-date knowledge on sericulture production techniques. A visit was made to CREA ("Centro di Ricerca Agricoltura e Ambiente Unitá di Ricercadi Apicoltura e Bachicoltura"), specifically to the institution's sericulture laboratory, where a silkworm gene bank of 200 breeds is maintained, as well as a gene bank of 60 varieties of mulberry trees.

Objectives:

To learn techniques of sericulture production in order to update, improve and perfect knowledge and to pass them on to the country's sericulture producers.

Assessments:

The study visit paid to the prestigious CREA Bacological Institute in Padua, Italy, also called Research Centre for Agriculture and Environment, provided knowledge about silkworm breeding, reproduction and egg preservation, as well as laboratory analysis to detect silkworm diseases and the corresponding steps for proper health control. The topics covered are of great benefit for the development of sericulture in Mexico, as well as for the technical update of the primary producers of the region.
